On Thursday, 5 November, from 14:00 to 19:00, a seminar on memory politics will take place at CEU’s Budapest campus, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian uprising. The seminar, titled “Occupation, Resistance, Adaptation – Memory Politics and Historical Debates on Russian/Soviet Entanglements with East and Central Europe”, will explore questions such as how the events of 1956 are remembered in contemporary Hungary, how historical memory deals with conflict, and how the post-Soviet experiences of the Baltic States and Ukraine differ from those of Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Finland.
Eneken Laanes, Professor of Comparative Literature at Tallinn University, will participate in the seminar’s third panel, titled “Post-Soviet Memory Politics and Identity Building.” Eneken Laanes is the Project Leader of ERC project Translating Memories: The Eastern European Past in the Global Arena. Her research deals with transnational memory and transcultural memorial forms in post-Soviet memory cultures of Eastern Europe. Laanes studied comparative literature at the University of Tartu, University of Bologna, the Free University of Berlin. She has been a Juris Padegs Research Fellow at Yale University and a Kone Fellow at the Helsinki Collegium.
