Personal Details Updates and Family Records Certificates

Personal Details Updates

Every Estonian national has the obligation to update his/her data in the Estonian Population Register. If you live in Hungary more than 183 days a year you have the obligation to update your place of residence with your address in Hungary. In order to do so, please fill out the application form and send it digitally signed or scanned by email to Embassy.budapest@mfa.ee or by post. It is also possible to update your address online in case you have a valid ID-card, pin-codes and ID-card reader.

You are not obligated to change your address only in case you are staying in Hungary temporarily for the purpose of study.

Did you give birth, got married, divorced or changed your name in Hungary?

If you gave birth, got married, divorced or changed your name in Hungary, you need to provide our Embassy with this information. An original document (e.g. birth certificate) should be sent to our Embassy (Áldás utca 3. 1025, Budapest, Magyarország) together with an excerpt from your Marriage Certificate that is certified with an Apostille. We should also receive a copy of your passport or ID-card (and a copy of your spouse’s passport in case of marriage). The original document will be returned to you within a couple of weeks after your data in the Estonian Population Register has been updated.

Marriage in Hungary

In order to get married in Hungary please check with the authority where you are planning to get married (register office, church) which documents are required. You might be asked to prove that there are no obstacles by Estonian law for you to get married. The document is called a Certificate of No Impediment. Estonian citizens who have registered their place of residency to Hungary can apply for the certificate from the Embassy or by post. Please fill out the following application form (PDF) and send it to us together with a copy of your and your future spouse’s passport or ID-card and copy of state fee transaction statement. According to the Estonian regulations the certificate will expire if the marriage is not contracted within six months after the certificate has been issued. In case you are required to submit your Estonian birth certificate and divorce certificate you can apply for these documents in English from the Embassy by post.

After getting married in Hungary you need to send your original marriage certificate together with an excerpt from your Marriage Certificate (certified with an Apostille) and a copy of your passport or ID-card (and a copy of your spouse’s passport in case of marriage) to our Embassy, so that we can update your marital status in the Estonian Population Register.

An Estonian citizen can apply for a change of name in Estonia at the Vital Statistics Office in Tallinn.
