Piret Raud’s Short Story “Catharsis” at Literature Night

The Estonian Embassy invites all friends of Estonian literature to attend Hungarian-language readings during Literature Night in Budapest and Debrecen.
Organised for the tenth time by EUNIC Hungary (the Hungarian cluster of the EU National Institutes for Culture), Literature Night features 26 participating countries. The aim of the event is to draw attention to world literature and highlight the unique character of various city districts by filling urban spaces with public readings. Over the three-day programme, actors will perform excerpts from works by mostly European authors at nine different venues—including an apartment theatre, a bicycle shop, an independent radio studio, and a polyclinic. The readings will be repeated every half hour, allowing visitors to plan their own route and enjoy the excerpts in whichever order they choose, walking between venues.
Estonia will be represented by the short story “Catharsis”, part of Nimeandja (The Name Giver), a short story collection by Piret Raud that won the Estonian Cultural Endowment’s Literature Award in the prose category. The story has been translated into Hungarian by Noémi Hartmann. Internationally acclaimed as a children’s author, Piret Raud published her first novel for adults in 2018. Since then, she has released three novels and two short story collections, which she illustrated herself. In total, Raud has published around 20 books, now available in 21 languages. Her style is marked by sharp humour, expertly crafted tension, and unexpected twists.

Debrecen: Readings will take place on 31 May from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Vojtina Puppet Theatre, performed by Gergely Máté Kiss, actor of the Csokonai National Theatre.
Budapest: Bence Juhász will read “Catharsis” on 6 June from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. at the apartment theatre Színkör.
